News

IoD Ireland welcomed members to its first in-person event of 2026, which provided directors and senior leaders with timely, actionable insights on the realities of operating within Irish regulated board environments.

Setting the Scene

Our event, 'Inside the Regulated Boardroom: Real-World Insights from Financial Services INEDs',  took place yesterday evening, 22nd January 2026,  at The Westbury Hotel, Dublin 2. It explored day-to-day responsibilities, the increasing pressures of governance, supervisory expectations, and the strategic opportunities shaping the role of Independent Non-Executive Directors (INEDs) in financial services.

The event was warmly opened by Caroline Spillane CDir, CEO of IoD Ireland, who welcomed members and panelists, and provided an overview of the topics for discussion. Attendees heard valuable insights from an experienced panel of Independnt Non-Executive Directors, which included Ian Britchfield, Independent Non-Executive Director and Chair; Mary Brennan CDir, Independent Non-Executive Director and Chair; Peter Rossiter CDir, Independent Non-Executive Director and Chair. The discussion was moderated by Kian Caulwell, Partner and Head of Financial Services Consulting at Forvis Mazars.

Insights from the Panel: Practical Lessons and Strategic Guidance

The panel drew on more than 30 years of collective Independent Non-Executive Director experience to outline the evolving value of independent directors and why the role remains central to strong governance. They highlighted the different expectations placed on INEDs in regulated financial services compared with unregulated sectors. However, noting that the overall role of a director is defined in company law. Managing relationships with stakeholders was identified as a critical board responsibility, requiring openness, consistency and strong support for management.

The panel underscored the critical need for rigorous due diligence when joining a Board, stressing that importance for directors to fully understand the boardroom dynamic, governance culture, and any potential risks or liabilities they may be taking on. A particular focus was placed on the growing importance of Directors and Officers (D&O) Liability Insurance as a key safeguard, with attendees reminded that tailored D&O insurance solutions are available to IoD Ireland members as a benefit.

Panellists also explored the evolving role of the board in shaping strategy, overseeing risk, and preparing for upcoming regulatory developments, including the EU’s NIS2 directive. The event was brought to a close by Board and Member Services Director Caroline Kinsella, who highlighted the wide range of supports and resources available to members through the IoD Ireland website. She also looked ahead to the busy programme of upcoming events, encouraging members to stay connected and continue engaging with the Institute throughout the year.
