The country has moved to altered restrictions for December and, while the public health measures beyond that are uncertain and may require further action in January, there is a sense of optimism with the promise of several vaccines tantalisingly close.

We are now over a month into the final quarter of what has been an exceptional year, as the country finds itself under Level 5 restrictions to try and counter the ‘second wave’ of COVID-19. Simultaneously, we are also approaching the deadline for the end of the Brexit transition period without a trade deal between the UK and the EU.

As we look ahead to the Government's publication this month of Budget 2021 and the National Economic Plan, these forward looking documents will be important roadmaps for economic recovery. Business leaders the length and breadth of the country will be eagerly awaiting these announcements and seeking further stimulus measures. One thing is for certain: these must be living documents which remain adaptable and agile to the exigencies of COVID-19 and Brexit.

When we published the results of our Director Sentiment Monitor back in December, 32% of business leaders believed that Brexit was the single biggest risk factor facing their organisation. If anything, this figure is likely to have increased, given the continuing uncertainty around the impact of the UK's impending departure from the EU, now less than eight weeks away.
