Setting the Scene

IoD Ireland members gathered for our latest Briefing event titiled, 'Maintaining Trust: Managing Fraud and Reputational Risk', yesterday evening, 24th September, at The Westbury Hotel, Dublin. The event explored the evolving fraud landscape, the reputational consequences of fraud and cyber incidents, and the critical role directors and boards play in strengthening organisational resilience.

Opening the event, Caroline Kinsella, Board and Member Services Director, IoD Ireland, welcomed members to the topical briefing session. The event featured a distinguished panel of speakers, including: Iarla Mongey, Director, Q4PR; Pat Lordan, Consultant and Adviser specialising in economic crime, fraud, financial intelligence and cybersecurity; and Robert Burke, Partner, Risk Consulting, Forvis Mazars. It was moderated by Teri Kelly, Co-Founder and CEO of Total Reputation.

Key Takeaways for Directors from the Maintaining Trust Event

  • Fraud and cyber resilience are board-level governance issues. Fraud is no longer solely a finance or IT issue. Fraud, cyber attacks and reputational risk is a board-level governance matter that require active oversight and engagement from directors. This is a key competency area for directors, IoD Ireland resources provide key support for this development, including our dedicated Cyber Security Workshop; our thought leadership article series, such as this piece with cyber expert Brian Honan; and through our director factsheets.
  • Culture is one of the strongest defences against fraud. Strong governance frameworks are most effective when supported by a culture of accountability, awareness and continuous vigilance throughout the organisation. Boardroom dynamics are critical in the development of a good culture.
  • Preparation before an incident is critical. Regularly reviewing and testing response plans can help organisations react more quickly and effectively when faced with fraud, cyber or operational disruptions. Boards need to oversee that internal controls are operating effectively in practice and can withstand real-world threats and increasingly sophisticated fraud attempts.
  • The first hours after an incident are critical. The importance of responding quickly and communicating effectively during an incident was noted as key. Early engagement with banks, regulators and law enforcement can help limit losses, improve recovery outcomes and support effective crisis management. While where appriopriate communications with your consumers and stakeholders can protect trust and support recovery.
  • Boards need clear visibility of emerging risks. Ongoing reporting, challenge and discussion can help directors identify vulnerabilities, anticipate threats and make informed decisions.
  • Reputation is shaped by how organisations respond. Stakeholders often judge an organisation not only on the incident itself, but on the quality of its leadership, communication and decision-making during a crisis. The importance of brand reputation was cited as a key area.

Continuing the Conversation

The event concluded with an engaging audience Q&A session followed by networking, providing attendees with an opportunity to exchange perspectives on fraud risk, cyber resilience and board oversight. The discussion reinforced that fraud, cyber resilience and reputation management are now firmly boardroom issues. Directors must ensure their organisations are prepared not only to prevent incidents, but also to respond decisively and communicate effectively when challenges arise. IoD Ireland will continue to support directors and members in this space by providing resources and supports, such as through our series of Thought leadership articles, Director Factsheets and educational and learning opportunities, such as our workshop series.
