AI for Strategic Advantage: Turning Ambition into Commercial Value

News

Directors gathered this morning at Westbury Hotel for a booked-out morning event exploring how artificial intelligence can be harnessed for strategic advantage. Sponsored by Dell Technologies.

Setting the Scene: Why AI Matters Now

Opening the event, Darren Clarke, Business Development Manager at IoD Ireland, highlighted the growing importance of AI, digital transformation, and innovation as key drivers for business growth and competitiveness. Drawing on findings from the latest IoD Ireland Board Director Remuneration & Governance Survey, he noted that AI and GenAI are now among the top three areas of expertise sought by boards for the coming years. This reflects a broader recognition that embedding AI is not just a technical challenge, but a strategic imperative for directors and business leaders.

In his opening address, Mark Hopkins, General Manager, Dell Technologies, reflected on Dells journey with AI, and the benefits it has brought to their own operations. He also reflected on the importance of culture, and how this was essential in the governance of AI and embedding AI use in an organisation.

Insights from the Panel: Practical Lessons and Strategic Guidance

Moderated by Caroline Spillane CDir, CEO of IoD Ireland, the panel included Mike Webster, Head of Digital Innovation & AI, DCC plc, Bronagh Riordan, AI & Data Partner, EY Ireland, and Ronan Carey, Senior Director, Dell Technologies. The discussion ranged from defining what ‘strategic advantage’ means in the context of AI, to identifying the most valuable use cases that align with business strategy. The panellists shared candid lessons from their own AI journeys, addressing common barriers such as misconceptions about AI’s capabilities, the need for organisational and cultural shifts, and the importance of leadership mindset and skills development.

A recurring theme was the need for robust governance and risk management, especially in light of evolving regulations like the EU AI Act. The panel also explored how smaller and mid-sized companies can leverage AI to remain competitive, and what responsible, ethical AI looks like in practice. Looking ahead, the speakers offered their perspectives on emerging trends and technologies set to shape the next three to five years and shared practical advice for leaders embarking on or scaling their AI journey.
