In January 2026, Michael was the recipient of the Tom Byrne Award, for his dedication thoughout the Chartered Director programme and his outstanding results that underline this. The Tom Byrne Award recognises excellence in academic achievement as well as individual participation in, contribution to and engagement with the Chartered Director Programme.

Michael Tangney

Michael Tangney Finance Director, EMEA Google Customer Solutions, Google

Michael (Mike) Tangney is a Finance Director for the largest Google Ads business in EMEA with responsibility for finance strategy, revenue narratives and sales team enablement. Mike is in his 20th year with Google and has a varied finance background. Prior Google/Alphabet roles include; Director of International Treasury. Led a technical specialist team to protect Alphabet's assets, maximize investment returns and deliver efficient capital structures; Lead for multiple Finance operations programmes including Global Travel, Expenses, Cards, Events and Data analytics where he built efficient global operations teams; and Global Crisis Lead, Coordinated Alphabet Finance response on major geopolitical events such as Ukraine/Russia/Iran/Israel. Mike is a company director for 13 European Alphabet subsidiary entities including 2 of the largest: Google Cloud EMEA Ltd. (primary Cloud entity) and Alphabet Capital International DAC (In-House bank). Mike completed the IoD Certificate and Diploma in Company Direction in 2025 and received the Tom Byrne award for outstanding academic achievement and contributions to the Chartered Director programme. Mike also has an MBA from Smurfit Business.

Sheila Byrne

Sheila Byrne Head of Learning and Education, IoD Ireland

Sheila is responsible for overseeing the delivery of IoD director development programmes, including the Chartered Director Programme, specialist programmes (such as the IoD ILCU Director development programme) and one-day training workshops and courses. Sheila’s previous experience includes a range of training and communication roles with both public and private sector organisations. Sheila has a Certificate and Diploma in Company Direction from the Institute of Directors, an MBA from Smurfit Graduate Business School, a Certificate in Public Relations from Technological University Dublin, and a BA (Hons) degree in History and Politics from University College Dublin.
