Dr Michael J Somers
Dr Michael Somers was elected to the position of President of the Institute of Directors in Ireland (IoD) in May 2017 and for a two-year term.
Dr Somers is former Deputy Chairman of Allied Irish Bank plc and is on the board of Hewlett Packard International Bank plc, Fexco Holdings Ltd and is Chairman of Goodbody Stockbrokers.
He was CEO of the Irish National Treasury Management Agency from 1990 until the end of 2009. He was also Commissioner of the National Pensions Reserve Fund and Chairman of the National Development Agency. He also previously worked in the Irish Department of Finance and the Central Bank and served as Secretary General of the Department of Defence from 1985 to 1987.
He was the Irish member of the EU Monetary Committee from 1987 to 1990 and chaired the EU group that established the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. He served on the board of the Irish Stock Exchange until the end of 2009 and on the board of the European Investment Bank until June 2013. He also previously served as a council member of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce and Ulysses Securitization plc and as a director of St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group until September 2014.
He holds various degrees, including a Masters degree in Economic Science and a doctorate from University College Dublin. He was awarded the distinction of Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur by the President of France and he is President of the Ireland Chapter of the Ireland-U.S. Council.
Liam Daniel is a Chartered Director and Chartered Accountant and served as President of the Institute of Directors in Ireland from May 2013 to May 2015.
He served with Elan Corporation plc from 1993 until 2014 in various roles including Controller, Company Secretary, Executive Vice President and as an Executive Director. Following Elan’s acquisition by the Perrigo Company in December 2013, he retired from Elan-Perrigo in March 2014. Liam was appointed as a director of Horizon Pharma plc in September 2014 and as a director of Malin Corporation plc in February 2015.
Liam was previously Financial Director of Xtravision plc from 1990 to 1992 and prior to that, he held the position of Head of Finance of An Post for a period of three years. He is also a former President of the Financial Executives’ Association of Ireland.
Dan Flinter is Chairman of The Irish Times, PM Holdings and of Venture Capital Investment Managers (VCIM). He is also a non-executive director of Aryzta AG and Dairygold Co-Operative. A former CEO of Enterprise Ireland and former Executive Director of the IDA, Dan holds an MA in Economics from UCD and is an Eisenhower Fellow.
Ita Gibney is founder and Chairman of Gibney Communications and a Director of St Francis Hospice. She is a former Director of Murray Consultants and Group Director of Corporate Affairs at Greencore Group plc. She has over 30 years’ experience in corporate and financial PR and has advised public and private companies, multinationals, professional firms, representative bodies and state enterprises.
She is an Honours graduate (B.A.) of University College Dublin; holds an M.A. (English) from McMaster University, Canada and an MSc (Communications) from Boston University where she attended as Ireland’s John F. Kennedy Scholar. Ita is a Life Fellow of the Public Relations Institute of Ireland.
Harry Lorton serves as Chairman of Bank of Ireland Mortgage Bank, of Independent Trustee Company Limited and of the Johnson & Perrott Motor Group. He is also a member, and former Chairman, of the Supervisory Committee at Royal Liver Assurance Sub-Fund, part of the Royal London Group.
A Certified Bank Director, he is a former Chief Executive of TSB Bank and of Permanent TSB. He is a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin and of Harvard Business School and is a former President of the Institute of Bankers in Ireland and of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants in Ireland.
Heather Ann McSharry
Heather Ann McSharry B.Comm, MBS, is a non-executive director of CRH plc, Greencore plc, Jazz Pharmaceuticals plc and Ergonomic Solutions Ltd . She was previously Managing Director Ireland of Reckitt Benckiser and Boots Healthcare.
She is a former director of Bank of Ireland plc, IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland, and also previously served as Chairman of the Trustee Board of the Bank of Ireland Staff Pension Fund and as a member of the Governing Authority of University College Dublin.
A Chartered Director, Imelda Reynolds is Chairperson of Beauchamps, a top Irish commercial law firm where she previously served as Managing Partner. Imelda is a practising solicitor with over 30 years’ experience. She is a past-president of Dublin Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Governing Body of Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) and also chairs DIT’s Audit Committee. Imelda is an elected Council Member of the Law Society of Ireland and is Vice-Chair of a division of the Law Society’s Regulation of Practice Committee. She is also the Chair of the Aquaculture Licences Appeals Board.
Imelda holds a B.C.L. from University College Dublin (UCD), a Diploma in European Law (UCD) and a Diploma in Corporate Governance (UCD).
John Reynolds is a Chartered Director and Chairman of Cairn Homes plc. He is also a Non-Executive Director of Computershare Investor Services (Ireland) Ltd, Business in the Community Ireland, and the National Concert Hall.
He was previously Chief Executive of KBC Bank Ireland plc, and was also President of the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland and a member of the board of the European Banking Federation. He is an economics graduate of Trinity College, Dublin and holds a Master’s degree in Banking and Finance from UCD.
