Overview

Learn the duties and responsibilities of being a director of a State Body. This is inclusive of Public Sector Bodies, Commercial and Semi-State organisations and State Agencies. Book your place on this dedicated workshop on the Governance of State Bodies. Eligible for 6 hours of CPD.

What will Participants Learn from this Workshop?

  • An understanding of the unique characteristics of State Bodies and the implications for corporate governance.
  • The role and responsibilities of the Board and Board Chair.
  • The role of management versus role of the Board.
  • The operation of Board Committees.
  • Core tenets of best practice State Body governance and their application in practice.
  • How to manage and plan for relations with the Oireachtas, relevant Minister and parent department.
  • How to set up the board for success.

This workshop is designed specifically for: 

  • State Body Board members or those looking to join a State Body Board.
  • C-suite and senior executives with governance oversight in State Bodies.

On completion of this workshop, participants will be able to: 

  • Critically reflect on the unique governance framework within which State Bodies and their Boards operate and the challenges therein for Board and Senior Management role execution;
  • Explore and apply the core tenets of best practice corporate governance as reflected in the Code through a broad stakeholder lens;
  • Promote corporate governance themes and best practice within a State Body as a Board member, member of the senior leadership team or as a stakeholder within the governance framework;
  • Evaluate the efficacy of the corporate governance framework and/or processes within a State Body;
  • Apply professional knowledge and skills to the resolution of practical corporate governance issues and problems.

Dr. Margaret Cullen Governance Advisor, IoD Ireland

Dr Margaret Cullen is IoD Ireland’s Governance Advisor and a recognised national authority on corporate and fund governance. She brings a rare combination of academic depth and practical boardroom experience, making her one of Ireland’s most respected voices on governance excellence. Margaret supports IoD Ireland’s team of Board assessors, ensuring that each evaluation is informed by the highest standards of rigour, insight, and relevance. She has an extensive and distinguished track record of conducting Board evaluations across the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors, providing Boards with tailored, actionable recommendations to enhance their performance and governance practices. In addition to her evaluation work, Margaret is a leading academic in the field, having lectured widely on corporate governance, board dynamics, and risk management. Her ability to translate complex governance theory into practical application equips Boards to meet today’s challenges with clarity, confidence, and accountability.

Workshop participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance on completion of the session.

She will integrate practical examples into the workshop and support participants in identifying key take-aways / action points.

Cancellations with a full refund are accepted in writing to [email protected] until Tuesday, 20th May 2025.  After this date, no refunds are possible, and all fees are forfeited for cancellations or non-attendance. Recordings will not be available as part of post-session materials.
