The Risk Exchange: A Director Forum

IMI, Sandyford Road, Dublin 16

The Risk Exchange: A Director Forum

10 March 2026 9:00am - 4:30pm

Risk oversight at board level is not demonstrated through registers and process alone. It is shaped through judgement, ownership, culture, consequence, and communication.

The Risk Exchange: A Director Forum brings directors, senior executives, board committee members, and NEDs together to explore simulated boardroom risk scenarios, examined from a fictional board perspective, not organisational disclosures, to protect confidentiality and encourage open cross-sector dialogue.

This is not a traditional workshop, but instead a structured director forum to elevate risk dialogue, strengthen oversight confidence, and develop practical governance questions for board-level use.

The value is in robust peer discussion, guided reflection, and shared risk insight - delivering continued skill development and assurance for directors who want to raise the standard of risk thinking around their board table.

Attendance is limited to preserve the quality and balance of discussion. Early booking is advised.

Have questions? Reach out to Gillian Roddie, Learning & Education Manager at [email protected] who'll be happy to chat.

Step beyond compliance: engage with peers to explore Financial, Strategic, Compliance, and Operational Risk in a high-trust, practical setting designed for board-level impact.

Why Should I Attend?

Participants can expect:

  • Increased confidence in risk oversight conversations at board level.
  • A practical set of governance-focused questions to support strategic dialogue.
  • Deeper insight into how risk management can support organisational resilience and commercial advantage.

Key questions that will be explored include:

  • What is the organisation's actual risk appetite - and is it being lived in practice?
  • Is there genuine understanding of exposure - or just familiarity with the register?
  • Where do responsibility and ownership lie in the grey areas between risk, governance, and culture?

With a curated small group of participants, this is a space for experienced leaders to refine their thinking and raise the standard of risk dialogue within their organisations.

Q1. What is the Risk Forum?

The Risk Forum is a peer-led, in-person learning experience focused on the live exploration of board-level risk. Each forum centres on a different fictional board scenario aligned to financial, operational, strategic, or compliance risk domains. It's highly interactive, Chatham House Rules apply, and it's designed for repeat participation. No two sessions are the same.

Q2. Is the session confidential?

Yes, this session will be confidential. Chatham House Rules will apply. All participants on the session will be asked to respect the privacy and confidentiality of information shared on the session.

Q3. Is this a workshop or a panel event?

Not quite. Unlike traditional IoD Ireland workshops, there's no formal presentation or slide deck. And unlike our panel events, participants are not passive listeners. This is a facilitated discussion where everyone around the table contributes to unpacking the risk scenario. The session is built for experienced Directors - your insight is part of the value.

Q4. Will I have to talk about risks in my company or board?

No. The conversation is structured around fictional boards and risk themes prepared in advance by the facilitator(s). You are never required to share your own board's risks. The session is designed to encourage strategic thinking, not disclosure.

Q5. How is the Risk Forum session structured?

Each session includes:

  • A short expert scene-setter to introduce the risk theme.
  • Guided exploration of the scenario using facilitator prompts.
  • Peer exchange on lessons learned, blind spots, and strategic implications.
  • An anonymised reflective takeaway summary post-session.

Q6. Who is the facilitator for this session?

This session will be facilitated by David Hanley, Risk and Strategy Professional and Founder, RisqonConsulting. David Hanley has over 25 years of executive leadership experience across Europe, the UK, Asia and North America.

Q7. When and where is this Risk Forum session taking place?

This session will take place in-person on Tuesday, 10th March 2026 at the Irish Management Institute (IMI), Sandyford Road, Dublin 16 from 9:00am to 4:30pm.

Q8. What is the cost of this session?

The price of this sesssion ranges from €545 - €625, depending on IoD Ireland membership status.

Q9. Who is this session for?

The Risk Forum is for experienced Directors, Non-Executive Directors, Board Chairs, and senior executives preparing for or working closely with boards. It assumes a working familiarity with boardroom dynamics and strategic oversight.

Q10. What can I expect to take away from this Risk Forum session?

  • A fresh lens on a live board-level risk scenario.
  • Benchmarking of approaches across sectors.
  • Insight into strategic risk navigation.
  • A reflective prompt summary to take back into your own board.

Q11. I'd like to learn more about this Risk Forum session. Who can I speak to?
