Over 200 business leaders attend IoD Economic, Property and Political event

Over 200 business leaders attended an IoD event yesterday evening, providing analysis on the key economic, property and politics trends in 2024.

Caroline Kinsella, Board and Member Services Director, IoD Ireland, opened the event by welcoming over 200 members to the event in the Westbury Hotel, Dublin 2. 

In her address, Caroline acknowledged the role of former Taoiseach John Bruton who passed away this week. Marking his contributions to Irish, and European politics, as well as the peace process in the North.

The event included a panel discussion with guest speakers Marian Finnegan, Managing Director, Residential and Advisory, Sherry FitzGerald Group, and Jim Power, Economist and Media Commentator. The discussion was moderated by Nick Mulcahy, Editor, Business Plus Magazine.

During the discussion, key economic trends were discussed, such as the impact of interest rates, inflation, exchange rates, and the impact of other economies on Ireland. The cost of living and wage inflation was also explored around discussions on finding employees with the right skills. 

The Irish property market was also explored, and the importance of meeting the residential housing target each year to replenish the market. During the discussion the rental market and commercial markets was also addressed.

As part of the political discussion, it was noted that 76 elections would take place in 2024, including two G7 countries, the US and UK, as well as the EU. 

The event Q&A addressed further interesting themes from the members, such employment, China, Northern Ireland, AI, skills gap, climate change, supports for the SME sector, and the EU elections. 

After the discussion, the event provided business leaders and directors with a key networking opportunity to connect and reconnect as a member community.
