Workshop on Getting Yourself Board Ready

This one-day workshop on 'Getting Yourself Board Ready' will be presented by Carol Bolger, Chartered Director (CDir).

This workshop content will be divided into a morning and afternoon session. 

Morning session

  • Journey to becoming a director: Why do you want to be a director? What does it entail? How do you become board ready?
  • Fundamentals of boards: This will include, the purpose of boards; how boards work; legal framework; and duties and responsibilities of directors.
  • Director effectiveness and best practice: This will include, directors’ attributes; board behaviour; exemplary boards; board and committee evaluation.
  • Self-Assessment: what’s right for you?  This will include areas such as: what type of board is right for you?; the transition to executive director; the transition to non-executive director; and what it takes to become a chair of a board.

Afternoon session

  • Building your toolkit: This will include, the executive CV; a director’s profile; developing your brand; and building your network.
  • Making it happen: This will include, understanding the commitment; doing your due diligence; preparing for board interviews; and best practice checklist
  • Building your personal roadmap: This will include, mapping out the journey; identifying gaps; options and approaches; and director development
  • Round up and conclusion: This will address the idea of your own personal plan. 

Workshop material is prepared by presenters and produced by the IoD wholly and exclusively for use by workshop participants. Please note that workshop material is provided in hard copy to all participants. We regret that requests for additional or soft copies of material cannot be accommodated. 

Booking and Cancellation Policy

Workshop Fee

  • IoD members - €425 ex VAT
  • Non-members - €485 ex VAT 

Places can only be confirmed on receipt of full payment. Cancellations will be accepted if received in writing by Thursday, 26th March 2019. However, there will be a 50% cancellation charge. All fees are forfeited thereafter. Workshop fees are also non-transferrable. 


IoD workshops may be eligible for CPD, including Chartered Director CPD, please check with your relevant professional body. IoD workshops are admissible as part of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) CPD Scheme and would count towards “Active” learning. Workshops may also be eligible for CPD with Chartered Accountants Ireland, the Law Society of Ireland and the Institute of Banking. Please check with your relevant professional body or call 01 411 0010 or email for further information.

Carol Bolger CDir

Chartered Director

Carol Bolger is a Chartered Director (CDir), a Certified Bank Director and a highly skilled non-executive director. Carol is an experienced Assessor with the IoD’s Board Evaluation Service, where she also undertakes governance training, and is a facilitator on the Developing Board Performance Module of the Chartered Director Programme.

Carol is a board member of An Post, the Health and Safety Authority, Link Asset Services Ireland Ltd and the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital. She chairs several board sub-committees including: Audit, Risk, Finance and Safety. Carol is also a member of the Audit Committee of the Department of Agriculture Food and Marine.

She holds qualifications in finance, strategy and innovation (UCC), and has an Advanced Diploma in Executive Coaching accredited by the European Mentoring and Coaching Council.
