Lunch Bites @ the IoD: Content is King - Screen Content Production in Ireland

James Hickey, former CEO of Screen Ireland (formerly The Irish Film Board), will discuss the current status of screen content production in the film industry in Ireland. Topics James will explore will include; discussing the key players in Ireland, the opportunities for non-executive directors in the sector, the role of state funding in the creative and cultural industries, the role of regulation, and how Ireland fares in the competitive world film market.

James will bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise gained throughout his time in film and in screen content production, to this Lunch Bites @ the IoD event on Thursday, 13th February 2020.

James Hickey

Former CEO, Screen Ireland (formerly The Irish Film Board)

James Hickey is a consultant and former CEO of Screen Ireland, (formerly The Irish Film Board) from 2011 to 2019. Currently, James is an External Director on the Board of the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO), a Director of the Lir National Academy of Dramatic Art at Trinity College Dublin and a Director of the Galway Film Centre. He is also currently working on EU Media policy with the European Producers' Club, of which he is a member, through Copper Alley Productions of which he is also a Director.

During his time at the Irish Film Board, many feature films produced with their funding were nominated for Academy Awards . These included "Room" directed by Lenny Abrahamson, "Brooklyn" with actress Saoirse Ronan, and animated films, “Song of the Sea” and “The Breadwinner”. Along with funding various TV drama productions, the Irish Film Board and James were instrumental in successfully promoting Skellig Michael as a location for the filming of two of the films in the "Star Wars" series. 

James was previously a partner in the law firm Matheson (formerly Matheson Ormsby Prentice) from 1992 to 2011, where he was head of the Media and Entertainment Law Group. He also served as Chair of Matheson for two, two-year terms from 2004 to 2007. James was Chair of The National Theatre Society Limited (The Abbey Theatre) from 1992 to 2001 and Chair of the Project Arts Centre in the 1980s. He was also a member of the Board of Screen Producers Ireland from the early 1990s to 2006 and is a member of the European Film Academy.
