IoD Lunchtime Briefing - Preparing Yourself for The Boardroom - Galway

The event will be facilitated by Thora Mackey, Head of the IoD’s Boardroom Centre.

Fiona Tierney C Dir will update attendees on the appointments process for State boards. She will share her observations on what you should consider before preparing yourself to serve on a State board.

Padraic White C Dir will discuss the importance of understanding the traditions, culture and dynamics of an established board. He will give his views on how to manage the influences and expectations of existing board members and shareholders, and how to carve out a role for yourself that complements the expertise of the existing board. Padraic will also discuss what is required when setting up a new board.

There will be an opportunity at the end for those in attendance to put questions to Fiona, Padraic and Thora.   

Registration

Registration & Light Lunch will take place from 12.30pm with the briefing beginning at 1.00pm sharp followed by Q&A.

Fiona Tierney is the (outgoing)Chief Executive Officer of the Public Appointments Service, where she successfully repositioned the organisation and oversaw the introduction of a new process of appointments to State Boards. Fiona has a career history of successful leadership in senior executive positions in both the private and public sector. She is an (outgoing) member of the Civil Service Management Board, and a Chartered Director of the Institute of Directors. She is a member of the Board of the IMI and of Trocaire, is on the committee of the International Women’s Forum and is a strong supporter of the 30% Club.

Padraic White is chairman of a range of SME companies including Collins McNicholas Recruitment & HR Services which was founded in Galway in 1990 and is now nationwide with 6 offices including, of course, in Galway. He was the first chairman of the State agency responsible for the development of the LUAS service in Dublin and is former Managing Director of IDA Ireland .

He was recently appointed as chairman of the six local radio stations in Ireland owned by the Wireless Group. He has extensive experience of chairing diverse interests in the not-for-profit sector.
