Overview

This online workshop on 'Understanding the Role and Responsibilities of the Board, its Chair and Directors' will be led by John Smyth, Chartered Director (CDir). The workshop will take place online and is part of the IoD Essentials Workshop Series. 

What Do I Gain from this Workshop?

Participants on the workshop will gain: 

  •  A better understanding of the role and duties of directors.
  • Increased knowledge of current regulatory and governance issues.
  • Increased awareness of issues around directors’ liability.

In this workshop, John will take participants through the following key areas:

  • Corporate governance– an overview.
  • The company – legal framework. 
  • Duties and responsibilities of the chair and directors.
  • Board structure and best practice.
  • Directors’ roles and definitions.
  • Risk identification, monitoring and mitigation.

Workshop material is prepared by the presenter and produced by the IoD wholly and exclusively for use by workshop participants. Please note that workshop material will be provided in soft copy to all participants.

John Smyth

Chartered Director

John Smyth is a Chartered Director, Fellow of the Chartered Governance Institute, Chartered Banker, and holds postgraduate diplomas in Corporate Governance and Company Direction. John has delivered quality director training courses for companies in Ireland and overseas. Using his broad experience, he has added value to companies through constructive challenge at board and committee meetings. From 1992 to 2000, John was Group Chief Executive with First National Building Society/First Active plc. He has extensive boardroom experience with a diverse range of organisations including IPB Insurance, Ostia Software Solutions, Department of Education, Northern Ireland. He is currently an Independent Board Member with the Department of Finance, Northern Ireland, and is Chairman of the Audit and Risk Committee. He is also an Independent Member of the National Transport Authority Audit and  Risk Committee.

  • Non-members - €275 ex VAT  

Refunds and Cancellations

Places can only be confirmed on receipt of full payment. Cancellations and a full refund will be accepted if received in writing to training@iodireland.ie by 5pm on Friday, 6th May 2022. After this date, no refund will be possible, and all fees will be forfeited in the event of a cancellation or non-attendance.
