Workshop Detail

This workshop will take place in-class in the Irish Management Institute (IMI), Sandyford Road, Sandyford, Dublin 16.

This one-day workshop on 'Understanding the Role and Responsibilities of the Board, Its Chair and Directors' will be led by John Smyth, Chartered Director (CDir). The workshop will take place in-class at the IMI and is part of the IoD Essentials Workshop Series.

This workshop covers the following areas:

• Corporate governance overview.
• The company – legal framework.
• Duties and responsibilities of the chair and directors.
• Board structure and best practice.
• Directors’ roles and definitions.
• Risk identification, monitoring and mitigation.

Workshop material is prepared by IoD trainers and produced by the IoD wholly and exclusively for use by workshop participants. John Smyth is a Chartered Director, Fellow of the Chartered Governance Institute, Chartered Banker, and holds postgraduate diplomas in Corporate Governance and Company Direction. John has delivered quality director training courses for companies in Ireland and overseas. Using his broad experience, he has added value to companies through constructive challenge at board and committee meetings. From 1992 to 2000, John was Group Chief Executive with First National Building Society/First Active plc. He has extensive boardroom experience with a diverse range of organisations including IPB Insurance, Ostia Software Solutions, Department of Education, Northern Ireland. He is currently an Independent Board Member with the Department of Finance, Northern Ireland, and is Chairman of the Audit and Risk Committee. He is also an Independent Member of the National Transport Authority Audit and  Risk Committee.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Places can only be confirmed on receipt of full payment. Cancellations and a full refund will be accepted if received in writing to training@iodireland.ie by 5pm on Wednesday, 1st September. After 1st September, no refund will be possible, and all fees will be forfeited in the event of a cancellation or non-attendance.
