Overview

Being a director/trustee for a Charity is a very fulfilling role, however it can also be very challenging with onerous responsibility.  IoD Ireland is hosting this full day in-person workshop specifically designed for those in governing roles in these organisations.   

This one-day workshop on ‘Leadership and Governance for Charities in Ireland’ will be led by Marie Collins CDir, Chartered Director. The session will also include an address from Guest Speaker Tom Shipsey, Chair, Repak. 

This workshop will take place in-class* in the Irish Management Institute (IMI), Sandyford Road, Sandyford, Dublin 16, and is part of the IoD Essentials Workshop Series.

What Will I Gain?
Participants on the workshop will gain an understanding and insight into:

  • the role, responsibilities and leadership in guiding their organisation to achieve its charitable purpose by building a firm foundation for good governance.
  • how good governance goes beyond conformance with laws and regulation.
  • the skills and the practical approaches to good governance to assist in delivering lasting positive social impact for your organisation. 
  • the governance challenges and developments facing charities.

In this workshop, Marie will take participants through the following key areas:

  • Understanding your role and responsibilities as directors/trustees.
  • A practical understanding of key governance frameworks for Charitable Organisations and how to apply these to your charity.
  • Board effectiveness, risk management and accountability.
  • Boardroom culture and dynamics.     

Workshop material is prepared by IoD trainers and produced by the IoD wholly and exclusively for use by workshop participants. Please note that workshop material is provided in hard copy to all participants. Requests for additional or soft copies of material may be accommodated upon receipt of written request.

Chartered Director

Marie Collins is a Chartered Director (CDir) and is the course leader on the Governance and Diploma Programme modules of the IoD Chartered Director Programme. Marie Collins has over 20 years’ experience working as a Director and with Trustees in a wide range of sectors including Charites/not-for profit organisations.  

Marie is Chair of Home Building Finance Ireland DAC and Chair of Bank of Ireland’s Dawson Master Trust Company. She previously Chaired General Investment Trust DAC. She is a Non-Executive Director of IPUT plc, a Non-Ex Director of Dunnes Stores Pension Trustee Company and an independent member of the Communications Regulator (ComReg) Audit and Risk Committee. She is Chair of the Trustees for Trinity College Dublin Foundation and past Director of EcoUnesco clg.

Marie holds a postgraduate Diploma in Corporate Governance from UCD and an MBA from Trinity College. She is also a Fellow of The Chartered Governance Institute in the UK.

Tom Shipsey

Chair, Repak

Tom Shipsey C. Dir. Holds a B.Ag. Sci (UCD 1883) and an M. Sc in Executive Leadership (University of Ulster 2006). Tom is CEO of Stonehouse Marketing Ltd., a wholly Irish independent Retail Food and Catering Cash & Carry Group.
Tom has been a member of several Boards including Concern Worldwide where he served as both Company Secretary and Chair. Currently he chairs the Board of Repak, an environmental not-for-profit organization, with a social mission of leading the recycling and sustainability of Ireland’s packaging waste, being an advocate for a new circular economy and educating businesses and consumers on reducing and recycling packaging waste.

Tom also sits on the Board of Kelsius, a small Irish Company which provides Wireless Temperature Monitoring and Digital HACCP Management systems for the Retail, Food Service and Healthcare Industries.

For the last number of years Tom has been chair of the Charity Institute Ireland annual judging panel.

Tom has a huge interest in Governance and Sustainability looking at how Boards incorporate good (or great) governance into the activities of the Board and Company while protecting the Planet. He became Ireland’s first Chartered Director in 2001 and has done a number of further studies on Sustainability and Business.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Places can only be confirmed on receipt of full payment. Cancellations and a full refund will be accepted if received in writing to training@iodireland.ie by 5pm on Thursday, 24th November 2022. After this date, no refund will be possible, and all fees will be forfeited in the event of a cancellation or non-attendance.
