50 under 50 – A Research Report with 50 Directors Under 50 Years of Age, details the findings of in-depth research undertaken in September 2012 with fifty IoD members under the age of fifty to examine their experiences as a director to date. 

The aim of this research was to assess views and opinions in relation to key areas of their experiences of becoming a director, what they consider to be important for the successful functioning of a board, the positive and negative aspects of being a director, the greatest challenges affecting directors in Ireland today, as well as what’s important to them in their careers ahead. 

Key results:

  • 90% of directors under fifty believe that minimum training requirements should be introduced for all directors
  • 45% of directors say appointment process to boards about ‘who you know’ 
  • 90% say their experience of being a director has been positive 
  • 22% say greater accountability for board members would improve the reputation of directors in the future
