IoD Evening Briefing - An Innovative Approach to Tackling Food Waste

29 March 2018 5:00pm

Globally, 1.3bn tonnes of food is wasted annually while 1 in 7 people do not have enough to eat. In Ireland, 1m tonnes of food is wasted annually and 1 in 8 people are affected by food poverty.

FoodCloud is a social enterprise, established by Aoibheann O’Brien and Iseult Ward in 2013, that enables the food industry to donate their surplus food to charities. In 4 years, FoodCloud has grown to have over 3,200 retail stores across the UK and Ireland, including Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and Waitrose, donating surplus food through its software platform. In 2016, FoodCloud Hubs launched, with warehouses in Dublin, Galway and Cork, this solution allows large quantities of surplus food to be stored and distributed to charities across Ireland. Ireland now has a solution for surplus food redistribution at each stage of the food supply chain.

The equivalent of 1.2m meals or €1.5m in savings to charities is being donated through the platform and the Hubs every month.
