IoD & Davy Partnership Event - Achieving Good Governance in Your Charity

Join us for this dedicated seminar, in partnership with Davy, where guest speakers Helen Martin, Interim CEO, Charities Regulator; Dermot Breen, Director & Chairman, Irish Cancer Society, and Carol Ann Casey CDir, Director & Chairperson, Central Remedial Clinic, will update members on the Charities Governance Code. They will also share their experiences on achieving good governance in your charity. 

Speakers and topics include:

  • Helen Martin, Interim CEO, Charities Regulator, will update members on the Charities Governance Code and other developments in terms of the work of the Charities Regulator.
  • As part of a panel discussion, Dermot Breen, Director & Chairman, Irish Cancer Society, and Carol Ann Casey CDir, Director & Chairperson, Central Remedial Clinic, will share their experiences as chairs of national charities and on achieving good governance in your charity.
  • Q&A from the audience will be welcomed.

Helen Martin

Helen Martin

Interim CEO, Charities Regulator

Helen Martin was appointed Interim Chief Executive on 30 October 2018. She joined the Charities Regulator as Director of Regulation in March 2017. 

Helen is a solicitor and previously worked in the Office of the Attorney General. She also worked in the private sector for over 10 years and during that time worked as a senior associate in the regulatory and competition law unit of a large firm and as an in-house legal and regulatory adviser for two telecommunications companies. 

Dermot Breen

Dermot Breen

Director & Chairman, Irish Cancer Society

Dermot Breen has been a Director of the Irish Cancer Society since 2008 and was appointed Chairman in 2017.  He is also a member of the Governing Body of University College Cork and a member of the Senate of the National University of Ireland. He was Director of Corporate Affairs at Tesco Ireland for 17 years and with Murray Consultants from 1986 to 1997.

Dermot has served as non-executive director of BlackRock Inc Global Series plc, Dublin Chamber of Commerce, Irish Payment Services Organisation, Retail Ireland, and served on the National Council of IBEC from 2001 to 2014. He was also a founding participant of the British Irish Chamber of Commerce.

Dermot holds a B Comm degree from UCC, a Master of Business Studies degree from UCD and the ACCA Diploma in Applied Finance. He has also completed the IoD Chartered Director programme.

Carol Ann Casey CDir

Director & Chairperson, Central Remedial Clinic

Carol Ann Casey CDir, is Chairperson of the Central Remedial Clinic and has served on the board since March 2014. She is an independent non-executive director of the Blarney Woollen Mills Group. Carol Ann is a Chartered Director and a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. 

Carol Ann is Managing Director of CA Compliance Limited. She supports clients with independent authority, oversight, strategy and compliance on HR contentious matters, such as conducting independent investigations and interventions relating to poor performance, bullying, harassment and sexual harassment, dismissals, protected disclosures and data protection.

Carol Ann concurrently provides an independent complaints reviewer service to include: holding the statutory office as the Independent Adjudicator of the Law Society, providing the independent customer complaints reviewer service for a UK Public Services Ombudsman, and she is the independent reviewer for a chartered body in Ireland. Carol Ann also advises on board effectiveness, risk structures and succession planning.
