As part of our ongoing work to share exclusive content and insights with members, we are delighted to invite you to join our upcoming IoD Briefings Webinar titled, ‘Insights & Advice from the Boardroom' with experienced non-executives, Dr Margaret Cullen and Maurice Pratt. 

Margaret and Maurice will give their advice and personal insights on joining the boards of a broad range of companies, from CBI-regulated financial services companies to SMEs and PLCs. They will discuss the following: 

  • Their experience of building a non-executive portfolio.
  • How to prepare yourself for non-executive positions and what to consider before joining a board. 
  • How to evaluate yourself as a non-executive.
  • Doing your due diligence before you join a board.
  • What a chair considers when recruiting a non-executive director.

Margaret Cullen

Margaret Cullen

Founder and Principal, Think Governance

Dr Margaret Cullen is a specialist in the areas of corporate and investment fund governance. She holds a PhD in governance from University College Dublin. Margaret is a published behavioural researcher with a particular interest in board effectiveness, processes, dynamics and decision-making, board and corporate culture, stewardship and corporate social responsibility. Prior to completing her doctoral research, Margaret worked for 12 years in the financial services industry.  

Following completion of her doctoral research, Margaret joined the Institute of Banking (IoB) as Director of Executive Education. She designed and ran the IoB’s Certified Bank Director (CBD) and Certified Investment Fund Director (CIFD) Programmes from 2012. Margaret taught investment fund governance on the CIFD Programme for 8 years up to April 2020. She has co-authored several thought leadership publications on investment fund governance including Investment Fund Governance: Developing a Risk Based Oversight Framework (published by Deloitte) in 2015 and the Investment Fund Governance Toolkit in 2019. She is currently Co-Academic Director of the IoB’s Certified Bank Director (CBD) Programme on an associate basis and lectures on bank governance on the programme. 

Margaret has been an assistant professor at the UCD Smurfit Business School for 14 years, lecturing on the Professional Diploma in Corporate Governance (a Smurfit Executive Development programme). She serves as a non-executive director on the boards of several financial services organisations. She is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Fund Boards Council in the UK. Margaret is a Board Assessor for the Institute of Directors’ Board Evaluation Service. 

Maurice Pratt

Chairperson, Uniphar plc

Maurice Pratt is currently Chairperson of Uniphar plc, an Irish based health care services company which listed on the Dublin and London stock markets in 2019. Maurice also chairs Nursing Homes Ireland, the representative body for private nursing home operators; B&B Ireland, the representative organisation for B&B operators; PlayOn, a fantasy sports business; and the SeriousFun Children’s Network, a global family of camps for seriously ill children founded by Paul Newman.

He is also a non- executive director of Donnelly Food Group; BFree Foods, a gluten free breads and baked goods business; and the Irish Tourism Industry Confederation. He recently completed his terms as chair of Barretstown, and European Movement Ireland.

Maurice is a former President of IBEC. He has previously held non-executive roles in banking, tourism, luxury goods retailing, and telecommunications. In his executive career, Maurice served as Managing Director of Quinnsworth supermarkets; CEO of Tesco Ireland; and CEO of drinks company C&C plc.
