The session will include presentations from Karen Forte, Independent Non-Executive Director, and Kevin Neary CDir, Non-Executive Director/Entrepreneur. In the course of their presentations, Karen and Kevin will give their advice and personal insights on joining the boards of a broad range of companies as a non-executive director. They will discuss the following: 

  • Their experience of building a non-executive portfolio.
  • How to prepare yourself for non-executive positions and what to consider before joining a board. 
  • How to evaluate yourself as a non-executive.
  • Doing your due diligence before you join a board.
  • What a board and its chair consider when recruiting a non-executive director.

Karen Forte has held independent non-executive director (INED) roles in three quite diverse financial services entities, an investment firm, a specialty insurance, and an electronic money institution. All are subsidiaries of global companies. The common interest shown by these companies in Karen's CV was her long executive career in information technology, cyber and information security. Her experience of outsourcing and transformation programmes has also proved of interest. Her current INED roles include: chair of a board; chair of an IT and innovations committee; chair of a board audit committee; and chair of a nominations and remuneration committee. She also holds board, board risk committee, board audit committee membership. Karen secured her first INED role in September 2020.

Karen's career in IT spanned 40 years with 34 years of this in the non-life insurance sector, it included eight years in consultancy with the big 4 and the balance in executive roles as CIO/head of services. 

Kevin Neary CDir is a chartered Director. Kevin is a lifelong entrepreneur, having built and sold GameStop Group after growing it from a start up, with his business partner Michael Finucane, to being valued at peak at €100m. Kevin drove this company from start up, to being the leading video games retailer in Ireland, with annual revenues of €85m, 500 staff and 60 locations. 

Since then, Kevin has operated as a board chairman, non-executive director, investor, mentor and advisor to companies ranging from second generation family businesses to tech sector start ups, across many sectors. Kevin is a growth focused, strategically minded entrepreneur. He recently acquired Chapters Bookstore with his former business partner.

Kevin has a degree in Marketing and Administration, an MPhil in Entrepreneurship and is a qualified Chartered Director. He has been an adjudicator at many start up entrepreneur/innovation national competitions, including the Irish Times/ Intertrade Ireland Innovation Awards, the Hothouse Docklands Innovation Awards, the Bolton Trust Business Start Up Awards, and the DCU Ryan Academy Awards.
