Overview

We are delighted to announce that our next in-person Briefing is with Helen Dixon, Commissioner, Data Protection Commission, on the data obligations all business leaders and directors should be aware of for their organisation. This Briefing will take place in The Westbury Hotel, on Thursday, 13th April 2023. 

In this session, Helen will outline developments on the fifth anniversary of the application of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).  She will also provide an overview of trends in complaints, data breaches and enforcement. In addition, she will cover commentary on the particular role Ireland plays in EU data protection regulation. The session will also address the new digital regulators coming onto the pitch in Ireland.

Commissioner, Data Protection Commission

Helen Dixon is Commissioner for the Data Protection Commission in Ireland. She was appointed to the position in September 2014. Responsible for upholding the rights of individuals regarding how data about them is used, the role, among other things, requires regulation of a large number of US internet multinationals with European bases in Ireland. Previously Helen was Irish Registrar of Companies, where she led regulatory enforcement of compliance with the filing provisions of the Companies Acts. Helen has also held senior roles in the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, working on economic migration policy, science, technology and innovation policy. She spent the first ten years of her career in the IT industry. 

Helen holds postgraduate qualifications in European Economic and Public Affairs, Governance, Computer Science, Official Statistics for Policy Evaluation, and Judicial Skills and Decision Making. She was delighted to have been awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) in 2014.
