Building Better Boards Panel Discussion - Chairing the Board

The third Building Better Boards event of 2017 will focus on Chairing the Board. The role and responsibilities of the chairperson have taken on greater importance in guiding the board and setting company strategy. The work of the chairperson ranges from setting the tone of how the board operates to being a link to the executive management.

Our panel members for this Building Better Boards discussion are all experienced directors who have served as chairpersons. From their experiences they will help us better understand the issues that should concern a director who is considering taking up or has assumed the position of board chairperson. The discussion will consider the chairperson’s role in light of current legal requirements and good corporate governance. Other key questions will include: How should the chairperson be appointed? What skills and personal qualities are necessary to be an effective chairperson? What should be the chairperson’s relationship with other directors and the CEO? In light of the ever-increasing responsibilities of board directors, the panel will also consider what should be the external presence of the chairperson.
