21 May 2010 - A&L Goodbody Breakfast Briefing "Remuneration Trends - Employment Law Issues"
Presenter
Barry Walsh, partner, A&L Goodbody
Session Overview
The economic downturn has changed how employers approach employee reward and some very particular remuneration trends have emerged. Cost cutting has been automatic across nearly all companies with an obvious focus on what were perceived to be high employment costs. Instead of, and in many cases in addition to, redundancies, many employers have substantially reduced remuneration. Even the public sector has imposed remuneration cuts that previously would have been unimaginable.
Barry Walsh will concentrate on the HR and employment law issues at the presentation:
- The huge impact of the recession and the change from reward and retention to reduction.
Salary reductions, employer trends, risks and legalities and the commercial reality. - Shifts in bonus structures. The move to performance related schemes. Introduction of restrictive covenants.
- Reasonable exercise of discretion by boards. Clawback of previous bonuses.
- Pension changes - pension deficits and the demise of the Defined Benefit pension scheme.
- Future trends in remuneration.
- This talk will be of interest to all directors and senior executives who need to keep abreast of remuneration trends and who may be responsible for remuneration policy.

Presenter
Joe Beashel, Partner, Matheson Ormsby Prentice
Session Overview
The Financial Crisis had many causes and contributory factors, one of which was weakness in both the domestic and international regulation. Joe will provide an overview of the developments that have taken place and the key proposals for change in the regulatory framework, both in Ireland and within the EU. The emphasis will be on the future rather than the past. Instead of focussing on a single industry he will give a broad and practical perspective on how international trends, EU and domestic proposals, as well as some specific developments, are likely to affect both industry and the consumer in the future. While the Financial Regulator is new in his role, he has set out his stall very clearly in recent appearances and publications and Joe will discuss the likely impacts of this new regulatory approach.
